Have you ever wondered how the celebration of Father’s Day began?
In May of 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was sitting in church, listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. At that time she decided her father, William Jackson Smart deserved to have his own day of recognition. It was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19th, 1910. After that, Congress (being made up of all men) declared a proclamation making the second Sunday of June the official Father’s Day. It was not until 1972 that Richard Nixon signed a law making Father’s Day an official National holiday.
